A Good Sign

Recent photograph of the "Monkey" portion of the original Organ Grinder sign from Portland. The sign still exists in Northern Washington in front of a small cafe.

Well, hello, little fella! Thanks to a tip from our Facebook group member, Jason Pittman (who also took the photo), we know that the original Organ Grinder sign’s monkey (which is likely about 8-10ft tall – not a little fella) still exists! We are not disclosing the exact location at this time, as we are in the early stages of attempting to contact the property owners. There is also a person who has expressed interest in purchasing and preserving the sign (who has experience in this area), should the owners be interested in parting with it. The sign, and the whereabouts of other parts of the Organ Grinder, will be featured in a chapter in the documentary.

You can help support the project by purchasing from the Crowdfunding Shop.

This is a fun coincidence that happened recently. It’s not specifically Organ Grinder related, but it ties in nicely with the theme, and it wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t embarked on this documentary project. Back in September, when I interviewed Mark Reed, he made several comments regarding a book called “The Best Remaining Seats…

Will is most famous for designing Pioneer Courthouse Square in Downtown Portland. Among other items, we found this concept drawing of the Organ Grinder exterior, rendered…

Don Feely performs “Aladdin” at Organ Grinder Portland

In February of 1996, shortly before Organ Grinder Portland closed, fans turned out to visit the restaurant one last time. Fortunately, several brought their camcorders with them, and have provided their footage to the documentary project. In this video, patron Ted Welty recorded organist Don Feely’s medley of themes from Disney’s animated hit “Aladdin” (1992)….

    A Man of Many Hats

On Tuesday, as part of our island-hopping Hawaii Trip, we interviewed Jerry Forchuk at a location in Waikiki near his home. Jerry and his brother Paul were among the original co-founders of the Organ Grinder. Jerry spoke on many topics, from growing up working closely with his mother and brother in the family’s restaurant business,…

  • Memorabilia Galore

Today, I met with a charming person who a lot of people might remember from the Organ Grinder’s heyday. This person was in possession of a trove of documents and memorabilia, including multiple scrapbooks kept by Paul Forchuk, one of the Organ Grinder’s co-founders. These scrapbooks were previously thought to be lost. (Obviously, the person…
