Who Gives a Flying Factory (Tour)?

Rich Greenland, that’s who! Rich lives near the Wurlitzer Building in North Tonawanda, New York.

In 2023, Rich took extensive drone videos of the site, and posted excerpts of the footage to YouTube:

Rich has graciously licensed his footage for use in the Organ Grinder documentary.

A bit of history:

Already an established company making pianos, Wurlitzer began construction of the iconic headquarters and factory complex in 1982, with construction and expansion continuing all the way into the mid 20th century.

Not only was this the home of production of the Mighty Wurlitzer theatre pipe organs, it later produced tens of thousands of jukeboxes annually.

In the 1970s, the building fell into disuse, and was at one point in danger of being torn down.

It has now been repurposed as a flexible industrial/office space, with multiple tenants, an event space, and a restaurant.

These scrapbooks were previously thought to be lost. (Obviously, the person…

It’s not specifically Organ Grinder related, but it ties in nicely with the theme, and it wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t embarked on this documentary project. Back in September, when I interviewed Mark Reed, he made several comments regarding a book called “The Best Remaining Seats…

    The Impostor?

It sure looks like the Organ Grinder, doesn’t it? But it’s not! While visiting Shawn Kenney as part of our Midwest Tour, Shawn provided a notebook filled with photos and documents of “Pipe Organ and Pizza”-themed establishments. There were over 100 restaurants with pipe organs created throughout the 1960’s-1980’s, most of them independently owned and…
