“Here is David Lee, sixteen, whose modern approach to the organ is truly startling.

From a vast repertoire he has selected a sampling of music as it was, as it is, and as it might be.

Having displayed an uncanny musical ability from the age of three, five years later he began dedicated organ study with Phil Raboin, author of seven books about organ and one of the few remaining organists of the Twenties. Phil’s fifty years of theatre and radio solo work were not wasted on David, an unusually apt protege, eager to make his own contribution in bridging the gap from past to present.

David is a gifted arranger. This creativity is demonstrated skillfully with Tchaikovsky’s B Minor Piano Concerto No.1. His exceptional ear, keen for inner parts of music, tremendous enthusiasm and instinctive grasp of fundamentals made possible a rapid advance to such complexities as time conversion, multiple time and compound rhythms. These were once considered essential techniques but are now too often neglected for lack of examples to inspire imitation, if not emulation. His work is derived from basic principles expounded by C.P.E. Bach, Tischler, Pelz, Brubeck, Kenton, and Mancini. His approach to the theatre organ is orchestral, not pianistic.

At the age of fourteen David embarked on his professional career as by far the youngest organist ever hired by the famed Organ Grinder Restaurant in Portland, Oregon, where for over who years he’s thrilled thousands, young and old alike, on what may well be the largest theatre organ in regular daily use. On the console, David’s natural intuitiveness and innate ability to infuse his music with life and sensitivity have brought him a large, dedicated following.

David believes that the final execution of a number should be made as spontaneously as possible, so that the end result will be fresh, exciting, and alive. He made the organ recordings on this dise at one session, with but one take. The same is true of the piano and drum portions which were recorded at a later session.

With this album, David has accomplished his goal of bringing the theatre organ out of its stereotyped image of music to roller skate by, into the twentieth century as the first genuine synthesizer – a marvelous instrument capable of a range that a full orchestra cannot match with the means to move an audience emotionally.

From all indications, his is a career to follow. He is sure to be blazing musical trails with an ear to the past and an imagination to shape the future.
